Sitwala is derived from a Zulu phrase for “We Carry”. It refers to the responsibility that we carry on behalf of our customers, employees, shareholders and society. Our four-pointed logo is derived from an ancient African basket-weave pattern meaning “excellence”, “genuineness” and “authenticity”, some of the most important values in Sitwala. In addition to its ancient African heritage, the logo also has a modern feel and can be interpreted as copper tracks etched on an electronic circuit board, clearly identifying Sitwala as a technology company. |

Products

On its own, and in partnership with a number of partners, Sitwala is developing products and technology platforms in the following areas:
Time and attendance terminals

Sitwala has partnered with a leading staffing company to produce a terminal for recording time & attendance at dispersed sites. Employees, contractors and temporary staff record their arrival and departure times on our terminals using a variety of identification methods such as magnetic cards, biometrics, RFID tags and smart cards. The time information is transferred via a GPRS link to a back office application where time sheet reports are produced and where the data is integrated into other systems such as payroll.

Traffic light pre-emption devices

Sitwala has developed a revolutionary new traffic light pre-emption device. The device is for public transport and emergency vehicles to allow for pre-emption of the traffic signal phases.

How does it work?
- A vehicle-based unit continually transmits the vehicles's position and speed
- An intersection unit receices the vehicle's position and speed, and calculates when the vehicle will arrive at the intersection
- Based on the configured settings, the intersection unit activates a pre-emption request signal to an existing traffic signal controller
- The traffic signal controller pre-empts the normal cycle, reducing or eliminating the waiting time for the oncoming priority vehicle

Cellular wireless remote control and monitoring platform

The ubiquitous presence of standards-based cellular networks world-wide enables a wealth of applications for long-distance wireless remote control and monitoring. Recognizing this opportunity, Sitwala has created a robust, flexible, yet low cost, platform to support a broad range of wireless control applications. Re-use of a common platform ensures efficient re-use of a large library of software already developed for the platform. Our flexible hardware architecture allows for optional support for the full range of GSM data standards including GPRS, EDGE, UMTS and HSDPA. Using our platform provides unbeatable time-to-market and low development costs for any new wide area wireless networking application.

Electricity demand side management and smart metering

Energy costs are rising at an alarming rate world-wide due to the scarcity of energy resources. In developing countries, like South Africa, the combination of rapid economic growth, urbanization and social development has lead to growth in electricity demand far exceeding the rate at which new generation capacity can be created. There is a need to manage electricity usage at the subscriber premises in a more granular and elegant way. Sitwala’s designs in this field allow the utility to manage demand of subscribers individually and with high precision. A Sitwala smart meter installed in a customer’s premises simultaneously enables other applications such as remote meter reading, pre-paid electricity vending, dynamic tariffing and remote home management.

Digital TV

Sitwala has prototyped core designs for DVB-H and DVB-T receivers and decoders. We have strong relationships with the major silicon vendors in the digital TV space. Our core product designs are low cost and, in the case of handheld viewers, are compact and low-power to achieve long-battery life. Our handheld designs are optimized for viewing in outdoor conditions, using the latest display technology. Our digital TV platforms allow our customers to achieve rapid time-to-market and reduced product development time and cost. We already support emerging software environments such as Google’s Android. The engineering effort is spent customizing and branding the device for our customer rather than debugging the core platform.

Our products are distributed via a variety of supply models and partners. Contact us for more information and we’ll put you in touch with a consultant that can provide a solution to your product needs.
Our products and technology platforms also offer our customers the opportunity to achieve rapid time to market and vastly reduced development costs for their own product lines. By customizing one of Sitwala’s existing designs rather than designing from scratch, our customer saves time and development budget.
Our strategy is to continue to build suitable niche product solutions for strategic markets. As a result our portfolio of products is growing rapidly.
